Road Safety Advocate Urges Church Leaders to Use the Pulpit to Promote Safe Driving
A Road Safety Advocate, Rev. Cyril Crabbe, has called on church leaders to actively promote road safety education from the pulpit, stressing that the church has a vital role to play in saving lives.
Speaking on the importance of road safety awareness within the Christian community with the GPCC News, Rev. Crabbe said the pulpit is primarily a platform for salvation and life transformation, and therefore any message that protects and preserves human life must be addressed from it.
“The pulpit itself is a salvation platform. Anything that saves lives must be discussed on the pulpit,” he stated.
Spiritual Issues
According to him, churches regularly address spiritual issues such as sin, moral conduct, and social vices through biblical teachings, and road safety should equally be considered an important subject for discussion because it directly affects human life and well-being.
He explained that many church members travel long distances from different parts of the city to attend church services, often passing through dangerous accident-prone areas. Using his own congregation as an example, Rev. Crabbe noted that some members of his church travel through areas such as Odorkor and the stretch between Awoshie and Odorkor, which he described as a particularly dangerous section of the road.
“There is a dangerous accident spot around that stretch, and the number of crashes that occur there is frightening,” he said.
Rev. Crabbe therefore urged pastors to consistently incorporate simple but practical road safety tips into their sermons. According to him, brief reminders during church services can significantly influence the behavior of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
“Within just five minutes, pastors can remind their congregation to wear their seat belts, observe speed limits, cross only at designated points, use zebra crossings, and obey traffic lights,” he explained.
He emphasized that repeated reminders from the pulpit would help reinforce safety consciousness among church members, prompting them to be more careful on the roads.
Commercial Vehicles
Rev. Crabbe also encouraged passengers who travel in commercial vehicles to speak up whenever drivers engage in dangerous practices such as overspeeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, or wrongful overtaking.
“We are empowering passengers from the pulpit to speak up and not remain silent when drivers are putting their lives at risk,” he said.
According to him, educating church members on road safety would enable them to become advocates for safer roads in their communities.
“If a church has a thousand members and road safety messages are consistently echoed from the pulpit, those members will carry the message wherever they go and become custodians of safety in society,” he noted.
Rev. Crabbe also highlighted the importance of safety for other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motor riders. He encouraged motor riders to wear helmets and reflective clothing, while pedestrians should use footbridges and cross roads at approved points.
“When these messages are repeated consistently in church just like biblical teachings, they remain in the minds of the people,” he added.
He concluded by stressing that the teachings people receive in church often influence their daily conduct outside the church environment. Therefore, promoting road safety from the pulpit would not only save individual lives but also protect families and contribute to national development.
“The pulpit will always attract people, and the pulpit can save lives,” Rev. Crabbe emphasized.
